Biscayne Bay's natural deep-water harbor has sheltered vessels since the Tequesta carved cypress canoes along its mangrove shores fifteen centuries ago.
By 1896, when Henry Flagler extended his railroad to the bay's western edge, the waterway had become the staging ground for Miami's transformation from trading post to winter resort. Today the bay stretches fifteen miles north to south, its protected waters lying between the barrier islands of Miami Beach and the mainland skyline that rises from the former limestone ridge where Flagler built his Royal Palm Hotel.

Cruise routes pass the Port of Miami on Dodge Island, another dredge project completed in 1960, now handling five million cruise passengers annually. The skyline behind it contains forty-three buildings over four hundred feet tall, most completed after 2010 when international capital reshaped Brickell Avenue and the downtown waterfront. Architecture firms designed these glass towers to exploit bay views; the same views, reversed, define what passengers see from the water: cantilevered terraces, infinity pools suspended twenty stories up, and the angular geometry of Zaha Hadid's One Thousand Museum, its exoskeleton visible from three miles offshore.
